Explaining Corrugated Roof Sheet Material Types

While here at Cardinal Steels, we produce steel corrugated roofing sheets, there is a range of additional material types used by roofing contractors depending on environmental conditions and aesthetic preferences. Understanding the properties of these materials is essential in ensuring optimal application an longevity of roofing solutions. In addition to steel, the two most common materials used for manufacturing corrugated roofing sheets ae polycarbonate and polyvinyl chloride (commonly known as PVC).

Corrugated Steel Roof Sheet

Steel

Highly resilient with the ability to withstand heavy weather conditions

Lifespans significantly longer than other materials

The Advantages of Corrugated Steel Roofing for Installation

As a specialist corrugated roofing supplier, we are fully equipped to manufacture custom corrugated metal sheets. We understand the many advantages these durable panels provide, not only for those installing them but also for those living in properties that use them. These include:

  • Highly durable: Corrugated steel sheets are highly resistant due to their metal composition, capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions including heavy rain, snow and strong winds.
  • Low maintenance: As a result of being so resistant to corrosion, pests and mould, more so than any other roofing materials, corrugated metal roofs require very little upkeep. This means you won’t have to deal with angry customers complaining that their roofing panels have deteriorated quicker than expected.
  • Lightweight: A huge benefit for the actual contractor or installer, these steel sheets are remarkably lightweight which makes them easier and quicker to fit.
  • Energy efficient: Metal roofing reflects sunlight which can help to reduce heat absorption and keep properties cooler. This can result in lower energy costs in warmer climates.

Marrying Sheet Size with Project Needs

As a specialist in corrugated roofing, we are fully equipped to manufacture custom corrugated metal sheets. We understand the many advantages these durable panels provide, not only for those installing them but also for those living in properties that use them.

Choosing the right sheet size is crucial for a successful roofing project. Larger sheets are ideal for covering expansive roofs, such as those on industrial buildings, because they reduce the number of seams and speed up installation. On the other hand, smaller sheets are better suited for intricate roof designs, where maneuverability and fitting into tight spaces are important.

Always match the sheet size to the project’s scale and complexity to ensure faster installation and efficient material use.

Looking to Buy Corrugated Metal Roofing?

Large Industrial or Commercial Buildings:

Recommended Sheet Size: Large sheets.
Considerations: Larger sheets cover more area with fewer seams, reducing installation time and minimising potential leak points. Ideal for expansive, flat roofs.

Residential Homes with Complex Rooflines:

Recommended Sheet Size: Smaller, customisable sheets.
Considerations: Smaller sheets are easier to manoeuvre around intricate rooflines, dormers and valleys. Customisable sizes ensure a better fit in tight spaces.

Barns, Warehouses or Agricultural Buildings:

Recommended Sheet Size: Medium to large sheets.
Considerations: Use larger sheets for simplicity and speed, but be mindful of roof shape. Medium sheets may work better for buildings with moderate complexity.

Garden Sheds or Outbuildings:

Recommended Sheet Size: Smaller sheets.
Considerations: These projects typically require smaller sheets due to their size and simplicity, making them easier to handle and install without waste.

Commercial Spaces with Irregular Roof Shapes:

Recommended Sheet Size: A mix of sizes.
Considerations: Use larger sheets for broad, flat sections and smaller sheets for corners or angled areas to ensure efficient coverage and minimise waste.

Variety of Corrugated Roofing Finishes

The finish of your steel roofing sheets determines key properties like longevity, appearance and resistance to environmental factors. We recommend Plastisol due to its exceptional corrosion and abrasion resistance. Our range of finishes includes:

  • Galvanised Finish: Available in shiny or dull silver, in thicknesses from 0.4mm to 0.7mm, CE EN 14782 compliant.

Steel Roof Flashing And Trims

Roof flashings and trims are crucial for corrugated roofing systems, ensuring durability, waterproofing and aesthetics. Flashings, such as valley, step and pipe flashings, are metal or waterproof materials installed at roof intersections and penetrations to prevent water leaks. Trims, including ridge caps, eave trims and gable trims, cover and protect the edges and seams of roofing panels, enhancing appearance and providing additional weather resistance. Together, these components create a watertight, long-lasting roofing system.

Fixings

We provide a comprehensive range of fixings for corrugated roofs, including TEK screws for secure panel attachment, foam fillers to seal gaps and prevent water ingress and butyl tape for superior waterproofing at seams and joints. Our offerings also include insulation materials to enhance thermal efficiency, TEK drivers for easy and efficient screw installation and stitchers for fastening overlapping sheets. These high-quality fixings ensure a durable, watertight and energy-efficient roofing system.

Sealants and their Application

Sealants offer an additional defence mechanism, protecting against potential leaks at overlaps or junctions. The application of sealants bolsters roof integrity and prevents moisture ingress, a critical step during the installation phase.

The effectiveness of the roofing system is notably increased through the judicious selection and installation of these accessories. Their role in fortifying the structure cannot be understated, ensuring that corrugated roofing remains a durable and resilient choice for commercial and residential buildings alike.

Color Coat Range

Colours Available

One of the major advantages of corrugated steel sheets is how customisable they are. We offer a wide palette of colours that will allow your builds to complement existing design schemes or create entirely new architectural statements. The right colour choice can impact not only the appearance of the build you are working on but also the energy efficiency with darker colours helping to retain warmth, whilst lighter shades reflect heat to aid interior climate control.

What are the Benefits of Corrugated Metal Roofing?

Corrugated steel roofing sheets have been a popular choice for a variety of businesses across different sectors. This is due to their several benefits including:

Durable & Resilient: Designed for longevity, metal roofing resists corrosion, wear, and tear. It also has non-combustible properties, ensuring resilience over time, even in the event of a fire.

Long Lasting: The lifespan of a corrugated roof panel is determined by factors like thickness and coating. Thicker panels with higher-quality coatings tend to last longer.

Low Maintenance: Corrugated galvanised sheets require minimal maintenance. They can withstand months or even years without showing signs of wear and tear. At most, a recoating may be needed to address corroded portions.

Prevents Water Build-up: Smooth surfaces allow water to easily run off, preventing water build-up, even in harsh weather conditions.

Sustainable: Metal steel roofing is recyclable, enhancing your company’s eco-friendly image.

Energy Efficient: Insulated corrugated roofing, coated with a reflective solution, helps maintain a cool atmosphere, reducing the need for continuous cooling.
