What is Overcladding?
Overcladding is the process of adding a new layer of cladding over an existing roof, effectively giving the property a “second skin” with durable metal sheeting. This method utilises a space bar system to support the new panels, allowing for enhanced structural integrity. Project managers often seize this opportunity to install additional insulation between the new and old cladding, significantly boosting the thermal performance of the building. You can even use the existing roof as a liner for our twin skin system.

Benefits of Overcladding
1. Minimised Disruption
One of the key advantages of overcladding is that it minimises disruption to both buildings and occupants. For businesses operating in commercial spaces, time is money. Unlike more invasive renovations that may require vacating the premises, overcladding allows work to proceed while occupants remain on-site. This means less downtime and greater productivity.
2. Enhanced Appearance
Overcladding can transform older buildings, giving them a fresh, modern look. This aesthetic upgrade is especially beneficial for both residential and commercial properties, allowing them to blend seamlessly with surrounding architecture. The durable nature of metal cladding ensures that this appealing appearance is maintained for years.
3. Reduced Maintenance Costs
When considering property modifications, maintenance is crucial. Overcladding significantly reduces risks associated with condensation, thermal bridging, and corrosion. This means lower maintenance costs and less frequent repairs, making it a wise investment for property owners.
4. Increased Lifespan
With its resistance to weather damage and low maintenance requirements, overcladding extends the lifespan of your roof. Property owners can enjoy peace of mind knowing that their investment will last without the need for constant repairs or replacements.
5. Improved Energy Efficiency
One of the standout benefits of overcladding is its ability to enhance thermal performance and energy efficiency. The added layer of protection improves insulation, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature year-round. This not only contributes to a greener environment but can also lead to significant savings on energy bills over time.
How to Overclad a Roof
For larger structures like commercial buildings, we recommend using steel purlins as supports for the overcladding sheets. For smaller residential structures, such as sheds and garden rooms, timber batons can be used. These supports should be laid and fixed horizontally to the existing structure, with spacing not exceeding 1.2m for our 0.7 material or 1m for our 0.5 material. Ensure the purlins or batons are spaced evenly for optimal support.
Plenty of Coatings & Colours Available
We aim to cater to a diverse array of aesthetic preferences, so you can find the right insulated steel roofing panel to compliment any existing property or new build plans.
From standard tones like whites and blacks to more vibrant hues like heritage green and terracotta, we have plenty of customisation options available.
Be advised that some colour options are only available when selecting a suitable coating for your insulated panels. Our plastisol and polyester coatings offer the widest choice for customisation. Our galvanised steel coating meanwhile comes without the availability for coloured finishes but makes up for this with it’s exceptional strength and longevity.
