Metal Wall Cladding Sheet FAQs
-
Which steel cladding profile is best for walls?
For most agricultural, industrial and commercial buildings, a box profile cladding sheet such as our 32/1000 or 34/1000 is the most practical choice for wall cladding, offering a clean, modern finish and good strength between sheeting rails.
- 32/1000 and 34/1000 Box Profile: 1000mm cover width, crisp trapezoidal ribs. Suits warehouses, workshops, farm buildings, garages and commercial units.
- Corrugated sheets: a traditional rounded profile, often chosen for barns, stables and rural buildings where planners or owners want a more traditional look.
- Laying direction: wall sheets are usually fixed vertically onto horizontal sheeting rails. Horizontal laying is possible but needs vertical rails and different flashing details, so speak to us first.
Not sure which suits your building? Send us your drawings or dimensions and we’ll recommend a profile.
-
What thickness of steel cladding sheet do I need?
We recommend 0.5mm steel for wall cladding. It gives the right balance of strength, weight and cost for side cladding on most buildings, and is the standard thickness used across our metal wall cladding range.
The maximum distance between wall sheeting will depend oon the profile and wind loading at your site. Check the load and span tables on our technical brochure or speak to our team before setting out your rails, as sheets fixed to rails that are spaced too far apart can deflect or fail under wind suction.
-
Do I need insulated cladding, or will single-skin sheets do?
Single-skin steel cladding is suitable for unheated buildings such as barns, stores and open-sided structures. Heated or occupied buildings normally need an insulated build-up to meet Building Regulations Part L energy requirements, which is why we recommend discussing our insulated wall cladding sheets with our team.
- Single skin: one layer of profiled steel fixed to rails. Cost-effective and quick to install, but provides no thermal insulation.
- Condensation: in unheated buildings, moisture can condense on the inside face of the sheet and drip onto stock, machinery or feed. An anti-condensation backing applied to the underside of the sheet helps control this.
- Built-up systems: an internal liner sheet, spacer system, insulation and an outer profiled sheet. These can be designed to achieve the U-values required for heated buildings.
Requirements differ between England, Wales and Scotland, so confirm the target U-value with your building control body or designer before ordering.
-
How is steel wall cladding fixed, and what accessories do I need?
Steel wall cladding is fixed to sheeting rails with self-drilling fasteners and sealing washers, normally through the trough (pan) of the profile, with stitching screws at the side laps and flashings to seal edges, corners and openings.
Explore our Installation Guides for more information on neccessary fixings and accessories (flashings, profile fillers etc.).
-
How do I work out how many metal cladding sheets to order?
Divide the length of each wall by the sheet’s cover width (1000mm for our 32/1000 and 34/1000 box profiles), round up to a whole sheet, then order each sheet cut to the height you need.
- Measure each wall length and divide by the cover width, not the overall sheet width. Round up.
- Measure sheet height from the base flashing to the eaves, allowing for any overhang at the top or bottom.
- Deduct large openings such as roller shutter doors, but remember the sheets above and below them.
- Avoid end laps where possible: sheets cut to the full wall height give a cleaner finish. Where end laps are needed, allow for the overlap.
- List your flashings and fixings by running metre and quantity.
Send us your measurements or drawings and we’ll check your quantities and provide a quote.
