Guttering for Steel Roofs
Guttering tends to be specified last and is the first thing to cause trouble. An undersized or badly positioned system overflows in heavy rain no matter how carefully the roof itself is detailed, and the water it sheds runs down the building rather than away from it.
We supply steel guttering, downpipes and outlets to suit the roof profiles we manufacture, in matching colours and finishes, so the eaves detail is designed as part of the roof rather than bolted on afterwards.
Sizing the system
The number that governs everything is the plan area of roof discharging into each run of gutter, not the length of the building. Pitch matters too, because a steeper roof delivers the same volume of water faster.
Adding outlets is usually more effective than increasing gutter size. A gutter fills from the far end towards the outlet, so a long run with one outlet has to carry the whole volume at its downstream end.
Falls and access
Gutters need a consistent fall towards the outlets. A level gutter holds standing water, which collects debris, accelerates corrosion and freezes in cold weather.
A gutter that cannot be reached will not be cleared. On agricultural and industrial buildings, debris accumulates quickly and a blocked gutter overflows against the wall.
The junction with the roof
Where the sheets meet the gutter repays attention. The roof sheets should discharge cleanly into the gutter rather than behind it, and the eaves detail should not let wind-driven rain track back under the sheet. That is trim and flashing work, and our flashings and trims are made to suit the profiles we supply.

What Coatings Do We Offer?
We always recommend our PVC Plastisol-coated sheets due to their cost-effectiveness and excellent resistance to abrasion and corrosion. Polyester-coated sheets are also a high-quality, versatile option suitable for both box profile and corrugated roofing sheets. However, care must be taken to avoid scratching during handling and installation.
