Re-roofing a Garage in Steel
Most garage roofs we supply are replacements, and a large number of them are replacing corrugated cement sheet that has reached the end of its life. That single fact shapes the job more than anything else, because it raises two questions before you get anywhere near choosing a colour.
The first is what the existing sheets are. Corrugated cement sheeting fitted before 1999 may contain asbestos. It is not something to break up, drill or dispose of casually, and testing before removal is the sensible course. If it is confirmed as asbestos cement, licensed removal is the route, and HSE publishes clear guidance on it.
The second is profile. If you are replacing only part of the roof, or matching an adjoining building, the old sheets are very likely to be the Big 6 profile. We make steel roof sheets in that profile precisely so a replacement lines up with what is already there.
Full replacement
If the whole roof is coming off, you are free to choose. Box profile in CS32/1000 is the usual choice for a garage: it spans the modest purlin centres comfortably and gives a crisp, modern line.
Cut to length means a typical single-garage slope arrives as whole sheets with no horizontal lap.
Partial replacement
Matching matters. Big 6 steel sheets share the profile of the fibre cement sheeting they replace, so new and old sit together without a step or a gap along the lap.
If the existing profile is not a current product, we also make bespoke and obsolete profiles to match.
Condensation over a car
A garage is enclosed, unheated and usually contains something you would rather not drip water onto. A bare steel roof in that situation will condense, particularly on clear cold nights when the roof loses heat to the sky faster than the air around it.
If the garage holds a car you care about, tools, or anything that rusts, specify anti-condensation sheets. If it is a genuinely open, well-ventilated store, standard sheets are usually fine.
A roof light or two is worth considering as well, since most garages have no window at all and working in one on a dull day otherwise means running a light.

What Coatings Do We Offer?
We always recommend our PVC Plastisol-coated sheets due to their cost-effectiveness and excellent resistance to abrasion and corrosion. Polyester-coated sheets are also a high-quality, versatile option suitable for both box profile and corrugated roofing sheets. However, care must be taken to avoid scratching during handling and installation.
