The honest answer is that profiled steel roof sheets are a weathering skin, not a working platform. They are engineered to carry wind and snow loads spread across their surface, not the concentrated point load of a person. Treating a roof as walkable because it feels solid underfoot is how falls happen.

Why a sheet can feel stronger than it is

Box profile draws its strength from its shape. The ribs act as stiffeners, so the sheet is genuinely rigid along its length. That rigidity is misleading, because the flat pans between the ribs are thin and unsupported, and a foot placed there is the worst case. Our roofing sheets are supplied in 0.7mm as standard, which is a robust gauge for a roof covering, but no gauge of profiled sheet is a substitute for a crawling board.

Where load can be taken, if it must be

Where access is unavoidable, load should be spread and taken over a purlin line rather than mid-span. Crawling boards or roof ladders that bridge between supports do exactly this. Stepping in the pan, mid-span, on a wet or frosted sheet is the combination to avoid entirely.

Fragile does not only mean old

Rooflights deserve particular mention. GRP roof lights are strong for their weight and are made to match the profile of the sheets around them, but they are not walkable and they are not always obvious underfoot, especially when dirty or in poor light. Assume any translucent panel will not hold you.

Working safely

• Plan access before work starts rather than improvising on the day.
• Use crawling boards, staging or a mobile platform so load is spread and supported.
• Treat every rooflight as fragile.
• Do not work on sheets that are wet, frosted or in high wind.
• Fit fall protection appropriate to the job.
